The thing about staying in our comfort zone....is that we're comfortable. Safe. Unchanged.
The thing about stepping out of our comfort zone....is that we're challenged. Taking risks. Growing.
Whenever we're doing work that matters, it's inevitable that we will face the unknown. But learning to lean into the discomfort in order to embrace the unknown is a skillful dance I've had to learn to be successful as a leader and entrepreneur.
Luckily, comfort zones are adjustable. Meaning, the things that scare the pants off of you today may be totally a breeze to you in a few months. We are comfortable with things that we are familiar with, and know what to expect. We are not-so-comfortable with things that we just don't have a lot of experience in. The best thing to do to bridge the gap between where we are now and where we'd like to be, is to take those uncomfortably comfortable steps towards the right direction. With consistent action, thoughtful feedback, and experience over time, you'll re-adjust your comfort zone, and will be ready to tackle your next challenge.
In today's video (initially shared via Facebook live in the Authentic Brand Leaders group), I give more insight into this concept. We chat about:
- The common fears people face (including myself) when it comes to stepping out into the unknown
- Seth Godin's prime example of how to adjust your comfort zone
- My personal example of using video to challenge myself in this area
- A few tips on how you can practice this principle in your life & business
